Lovelace Primary School > About Us > Vintage Lovelace

In 2021 – we celebrate 70 years since ‘Lovelace County Primary School’ was opened by Surrey County Council. The newspaper headline recorded, ‘Hook Children Have New School’.

Key dates

16th April 1951

Miss Doris (Dolly) Lee – Headteacher – School officially opens to admit 120 children.

School officially opens to admit 120 children in 3 Junior classes (40 children in each class). 61 children stayed for dinner; the rest went home.

24th April 1951

129 children were admitted to the Infant school.

This was now Lovelace County Primary school and stood on what is now the Early Years/Key Stage 1 part of the building.

5th February 1954

The new building (for the Junior Department) was handed over to the Education Authority and became the new Junior school.

There were 227 children in the Infants and 225 children in the Juniors. There were about 38 children in each class.

24th February 1954

School re-organisation.

Infants are a separate school with 6 classes. The Headteacher is Miss Millard, and the Deputy Headteacher is Miss Brook.

Existing Junior School admits 223 – Miss D Lee as Headteacher and Mr Struggles as Deputy Headteacher

24th July 1970

Miss Millard resigns as Headteacher of the Infant school.

7th September 1970

Mrs Davies appointed new Headteacher of the Infant School.

23rd July 1976

Headteacher, Dolly Lee retires from Lovelace Junior School after 25 years’ service.

7th September 1976

Mr John Jones starts at Lovelace Junior School as new Headteacher, Miss P Jones as the Deputy Headteacher.

31st August 1984

Lovelace County Infant and Junior School closes.

1st September 1984

Lovelace County Infant and Junior School opens as a new County Primary School, with Mr John Jones as the Headteacher, and Mrs Mauger as the Deputy Headteacher
