School streets prioritise pedestrians and cyclists on roads outside schools at school start and finish times. They are seen as a positive step towards safer, calmer and more healthy local areas and make it easier and safer to walk, cycle and scoot to school.
The School Streets scheme for Lovelace Primary School on Mansfield Road operates as a restricted pedestrian and cycle only zone, Monday – Friday between 8.15am-9.15am and 2.30pm-3.30pm during school term times only.
The School Streets Scheme encourages people to park away from the school to encourage more walking, scootering and cycling. Following a successful trial scheme a report was taken to Kingston Council’s South of the Borough committee on Tuesday 9th March 2021, where a decision was made to make the scheme permanent. The new Traffic Management Order began on 7 April 2021.
In September 2022 Kingston Council approved a second School Street for Lovelace Primary school. The School Street will be in place from 2 May 2023 and will include Devon Way, Beverley Close, Newlands Way and part of Stormont Way (up to the road closure). There will be a timed restriction on motor vehicles to create a pedestrian and cycle zone from Monday to Friday, between 8.15am – 9.15am and 2.30pm – 3.30pm (term time only), matching the timings on Mansfield Road.
